What is a roofing pitch pan?
A roofing pitch pan (RPP) is a construction detail that allows the installation of vertical supports or penetrations — on top of or through a waterproof roofing system — without negatively influencing the water tightness of the installation.

RPPs are flanged metal pieces of flashing material placed around irregularly shaped roof penetrations or vertical supports. The RPPs are filled with grout, asphalt or a pourable sealer, which seals around the roof penetrations to prevent moisture entry.

Where are RPPs used?
When normal flashing cannot be used, RPPs are used to seal the legs of roof-mounted equipment, refrigeration lines, water lines, rooftop vents, irregularly-shaped penetrations, support columns or any other item perforating the roof. They’re also used for sealing around perforations that experience vibrations, or minimal expansions and contractions.

Different types
Open top — these pitch pockets have the top of the pitch exposed to the elements.

• Hooded (counter-flanged) — a hooded RPP has an umbrella that fits tightly, and is sealed to the penetrating object. This creates a hood that directs water past the edges of the pitch pan, and lands on the roofing material. These flanges help protect the pitch material from the elements.

For optimal performance, RPPs should be matched to the type of roofing material being used.

What maintenance is required when using RPPs?
RPPs are a regular source of leaks. They must be maintained and checked on a yearly basis. Because the RPP is sealed around a roof penetration, it is considered an eventual source of leaks. Regular inspections must be completed to insure the condition of the pitch and flange materials. However, when maintained and checked properly, RPPs can be beneficial in preventing property damage.
